Historical Note
The Caribou (Osborn Caribou) diorama is located on the first floor in the Bernard Family Hall of North American Mammals. The diorama was completed in 1942 and was restored during the Hall’s renovation project in 2011-2012. The scene depicts the mating season for the caribou at Level Mountain in Northwest British Columbia. Herd members are gathering in the open so they can find and compete for mates. There are two females and a juvenile (left) and two males (right). The background painter was Belmore Browne (with George Browne assisting). The foreground artist was G. Frederick Mason. The taxidermists were Gardell Christensen and Robert Rockwell. (Windows on Nature, 2006)
