 Organization

Historical Note

The Mountain Goat diorama is located on the first floor in the Bernard Family Hall of North American Mammals. The diorama was completed in 1939 and was restored during the Hall’s renovation project in 2011-2012. The scene depicts three mountain goats on a cliff at Tracy Arm-Ford’s Terror Wilderness, Tongass National Forest, Alaska. The background featuring the Sawyer Glacier and the Endicott Arms fjord was originally painted by Joseph Guerry in 1939. The background was subsequently repainted by Belmore Browne in 1946. The foreground artists were Joseph Guerry and George Petersen. The taxidermist was Gardell Christensen. (Windows on Nature, 2006)
