Historical Note

The Caribou (Grant Caribou) diorama is located on the first floor in the Bernard Family Hall of North American Mammals. The diorama was completed in 1942 and was restored during the Hall’s renovation project in 2011-2012. The scene depicts two male caribou on the Alaska Peninsula. They belong to an alpine tundra herd in the Aleutian Range. The background painter was Belmore Browne (with George Browne assisting). The foreground artist was G. Frederick Mason. The taxidermist was Robert Rockwell. (Windows on Nature, 2006)
