Historical Note
The Coyote diorama is located on the first floor in the Bernard Family Hall of North American Mammals. The diorama was completed in 1949 and was restored during the Hall's renovation project in 2011-2012. The scene depicts two coyotes in Yosemite Valley, California with El Capitan and Bridal Veil Falls featured in the background. One coyote sends a howl through the valley which wards off packs nearby. The second coyote is digging for a gopher or another burrower. The background painter was James Perry Wilson. The foreground artist was Raymond DeLucia. The taxidermist was Gardell Christensen.
