 Organization

Historical Note

The River Otter diorama is located on the first floor in the Hall of Small Mammals, part of the Bernard Family Hall of North American Mammals. The diorama was completed in 1962 and restored during the Hall’s renovation project in 2011-2012. The diorama depicts a scene where a young female river otter comes ashore from a lake in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, and inspects a spider web. The background featuring morning mist on the lake was painted by James Perry Wilson. The foreground artist was Tomas Newberry. The taxidermist was James Hagenmayer. (Windows on Nature, 2006)
