Historical Note
The Groundhog diorama is located on the first floor in the Hall of Small Mammals, part of the Bernard Family Hall of North American Mammals. The diorama was completed in 1962 and restored during the Hall’s renovation project in 2011-2012. The diorama depicts a scene on a July afternoon in Cohocton, New York, where two groundhogs are heading out from their burrow under a pine-stump fence to graze on red clover. The background painter was Matthew Kalmenoff. The foreground artist was Raymond DeLucia. The taxidermist was James Hagenmayer. (Windows on Nature, 2006)
