Historical Note

The American Marten diorama is located on the first floor in the Hall of Small Mammals, part of the Bernard Family Hall of North American Mammals. The diorama was created in 1962 and was restored during the Hall’s renovation in 2011-2012. The diorama depicts a scene where a marten emerges tentatively in search of ground squirrels on the bare rim at Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. The background of Crater Lake was painted by James Perry Wilson. The foreground artist was Freidoun Jalayer. The taxidermist was James Hagenmayer. (Windows on Nature, 2006)
