Historical Note

The Spotted Skunk and Ringtail (Cacomistle) diorama is located on the first floor in the Hall of Small Mammals, part of the Bernard Family Hall of North American Mammals. The diorama was completed in 1942 and was restored in 2011-2012. It depicts a scene at Shiprock, New Mexico where the skunk and ringtail, a relative of the raccoon, are shown starting their evening foraging in the cool dusk. The handstand of the spotted skunk (left) is a warning to discourage the two ringtails (right) from getting any closer. The background showing the distant bluffs at sunset was painted by James Perry Wilson. The foreground artists were Raymond DeLucia and George Petersen. The taxidermist was George Adams.
