Sewellel (Mountain Beaver) (Diorama)

 Organization

Historical Note

The Sewellel (Mountain Beaver) diorama is located on the first floor in the Hall of Small Mammals, part of the Bernard Family Hall of North American Mammals. The diorama was completed in 1954 and restored during the Hall’s renovation project in 2011-2012. The sewellel is a rodent, but neither a beaver nor a high-mountain dweller. The scene depicts the diminutive sewellels in a lush moist area near Reflection Lakes, Mount Rainier National Park, Washington. The background was painted by James Perry Wilson. The wildflower models were created by foreground artist Reginald Sayre. The taxidermists were J. Hagenmayer (1954) and George Dante (2012). (Windows on Nature, 2006)
