Historical Note
The Grizzly Bear diorama is located on the first floor in the Bernard Family Hall of North American Mammals. The diorama was completed in 1941 and was restored during the Hall’s renovation project in 2011-2012. The scene at Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming depicts a mother grizzly bear showing her cubs how to tear open a rotted pine for ants and grubs to eat. The background featuring the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone was painted by James Perry Wilson. The foreground artists were Bernard Chapman, Raymond DeLucia and George Petersen. The taxidermist was Gardell Christensen. (Windows on Nature, 2006)
