Historical Note

The Gray Fox and Opossum diorama is located on the first floor in the Hall of Small Mammals, part of the Bernard Family Hall of North American Mammals. The diorama was completed in 1954 and was restored during the Hall’s renovation project in 2011-2012. The scene depicts a gray fox and a Virginia opossum feeding upon ripe persimmons in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee. The background painter was James Perry Wilson. The foreground artist was Freidoun Jalayer. The taxidermist was Gardell Christensen. (Windows on Nature, 2006)
