Description
"Fighting Dinosaurs: New Discoveries from Mongolia" was an exhibition featuring more than 30 well preserved and scientifically important dinosaur and other ancient animal fossils discovered in Mongolia's Gobi Desert. The exhibition focused on the two "Fighting Dinosaurs" of Mongolia: a Velociraptor and a Protoceratops. The exhibition also featured many specimens from Mongolia including meat-eating theropod dinosaurs, several nesting dinosaurs, and lizard and mammal fossils. These specimens enhanced understanding of life in the Gobi region 80 million years ago, and they shed light on the rise of modern bird and mammal groups. The recent finds were displayed together with models of feathered dinosaurs. The exhibition showcased discoveries and research by the Museum and the Mongolian Academy of Sciences paleontologists over ten years. The exhibit was curated by Mark A. Norell, chair and curator of the Division of Paleontology at the Museum, with contributions from Michael J. Novacek, senior vice president and provost of the Museum and curator of Paleontology. Collaborators included Dr. D. Dashseveg, expedition co-leader; Dr. R. Barsbold, Director of the Institute of Geology at the Mongolian Academy of Sciences; Dr. T. Galbaatar, General Secretary, and Dr. B. Chaadra, President of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences. The exhibit was made possible through the support of the Lia Wallace-Reader's Digest Endowment Fund and was on view in Gallery 3 of the American Museum of Natural History from May 19, 2000 through January 1, 2001.
