Description

"The Collector as Bookbinder: The Piscatorial Bindings of S.A. Neff", inspired by S.A. Neff's passion for fly-fishing and the art of book binding, was an exhibition featuring meticulously crafted bookbindings produced by Neff over a 12 year period beginning in 1986. The bindings were elaborate cases for books on fly-fishing and reflected the particular theme of each book. All volumes were bound in goatskin leather, often covered with intricate patterns in vibrant colors and decorated with fishing motifs. Highlights of the exhibition included "Angling in Hibernia," a multivolume work containing 158 actual hand-tied fishing flies depicting Irish insects and a "life box" containing angling memorabilia and tools. "A Treasury of Reels" contained six actual reels dating from the mid-19th to the early 20th century. The exhibit was on view in the Library Gallery of the American Museum of Natural History starting in April 2000 and continuing through June 25, 2000.
