Fred F. Scherer was born in Queens, New York, on March 1, 1915. At 19, Scherer began as an apprentice to a scenery maker in the American Museum of Natural History Exhibition Department and continued producing many landscapes for the museum's dioramas, including "American Bison and Pronghorn" in the Hall of North American Mammals. Scherer died at 98 on November 25, 2013, in Townshend, Vermont. Note on name: Fred is not a nickname for Frederick or Frederic. His middle initial is F. for Frank but he only used the F
