Biographical or Historical Note

Artist

Angelo Heilprin was a geologist, paleontologist, and explorer. Among the many places he explored, he visited the island of Martinique several times during the eruption of the volcano Mt. Pele in 1901-1902. Heilprin made a series of eight paintings depicting the event, at the risk of his own life. The AMNH received his oil paintings in 1908, 1914, and 1921. Of the eight, "Eruption of Mt. Pele, Martinique, 1902" may have been sold in 1974. Heilprin joined Robert Peary in Peary's first expedition to the Arctic (1891), and in the following year led the Peary Relief Expedition meeting the explorer on the Greenland ice cap.
