1992 September - 1994
Summary
"Work In Progress: Drawing Board to Dinosaur" provided a preview of the Museum's new fossil halls. While the Museum was in the process of remodeling its dinosaur and other fossil halls, the exhibition gave a behind the scenes look at the project. It illustrated the techniques and artistry involved in the creation of the halls. It included fossils that had not been previously exhibited, but would be on view in the new halls. Among the new specimens were Prestosuchus, a giant early relative of the modern crocodile, and a model of Mastodonsaurus, one of the first animals to live on land. The exhibition showcased the process of designing and building the Museum's newly completed Barasaurus exhibit. Visitors to the exhibition became part of the process of designing a new interactive computer system which was being developed for the fossil halls. The exhibition was on view in Gallery 77 of the American Museum of Natural History starting in September 1992 through mid-1994. Two halls devoted to mammals opened in 1994, two dinosaur halls opened in 1995, and a hall of primitive vertebrates and an orientation center opened in 1996.
