Summary

"Egyptian Tapestries From the Workshop of Ramses Wissa Wassef: An Experiment in Creativity" featured approximately 20 pictorial tapestries woven by hand on simple upright looms. In order to revitalize crafts and techniques that were disappearing, Dr. Wassef established a workshop in Egypt devoted to the art of weaving. Children and adults participated in creating original designs. The exhibition, on loan from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, was sponsored by supporting grants from the Exxon Corporation and the Smithsonian Institution. The exhibition was on view, along with black-and-white photographs and a color slide presentation, in the Akeley Gallery of the American Museum of Natural History from May 28 through July 20, 1975.
