Summary
Gyotaku - The Impression of a Fish was an exhibition of Japanese fish prints and was curated by Francesa LaMonte, curator of fishes at the Museum. The prints were created by members of Gyotaku-Kai (Friends of the Fish Print), a Japanese organization of artists and ichthyologists under the leadership of Yoshio Hiyama, an ichthyologist from the University of Tokyo. The thirty prints in the exhibition were obtained by the Museum with the assistance of the Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai (Association for International Cultural Relations). Janet Canning, a former Museum staff member and Gyotaku artist, gave interviews during the exhibition's preview (1).
