Summary

"Global Warming: Understanding the Forecast" was an exhibition which examined the causes and effects of global warming. Developed by the Museum in conjunction with the Environmental Defense Fund, the exhibit focused on global atmospheric changes that have occurred in the past as well as those projected for the future. The exhibit detailed actions that individuals, communities and nations can take to limit global warming. Under the auspices of Samuel M. Taylor, the Museum's director of exhibition and graphics, interactive multimedia exhibits presented and explained the effects of climate change. Through computer simulations, models, fossils and artifacts, visitors learned about factors that contribute to global warming. Solar panels were installed on the roof of the Museum to power all the terminals, television monitors, video projectors and videodisc players in the ehxibition. Michael Oppenheimer, the then- Environmental Defense Fund senior scientist, was the chairperson of the exhibition's Scientific Advisory Committee. As a companion to the exhibition, an illustrated book entitled "Global Warming: Understanding the Forecast," by Andrew Revkin, was published. Supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation, the exhibit was on view in Gallery 3 of the American Museum of Natural History from May 15, 1992 through January 19, 1993. Additional detailed information available in joint Press Releases put out by AMNH, the Environmental Defense Fund and Abbeville Press [1992]; and Fact Sheet #1 and Fact Sheet #2 [1992].
