Summary
"Drawn from the Sea: Art in the Service of Ichthyology" was an exhibition of 95 fish illustrations dating from 1938 to 1980. The exhibit presented the history, techniques and uses of scientific illustration. More than 20 artists were represented including Joseph Drayton, Charles Bradford Hudson and Kumataro Ito. Michael L. Smith, Kalbfleisch assistant curator in the Department of Herpetology and Ichthyology, was the curator of the exhibition. The exhibition was organized by the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History. The illustrations were on view in the Akeley Gallery of the American Museum of Natural History from October 7 though December 11, 1988. The exhibition then traveled under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibit Service to the McAllen International Museum in McAllen, Texas.
