Biographical or Historical Note

Mordecai-Mark Mac Low is a Curator at the American Museum of Natural History, Department of Astrophysics, Division of Physical Sciences, Computational Sciences.

Appointed Assistant Curator to the AMNH department of Astronomy and then Astrophysics when it was first established in 1999. He became Associate Curator in 2002 and in 2007 was promoted to Curator. From 2005 to 2012 he acted as Curator in Charge of the department and from 2007 until 2012 he acted as Division Chair for Physical Sciences. Contributed digital and electronic collections to the department when it was established in 1999

Mac Low is a professor at the Museum’s Richard Gilder Graduate School and an adjunct professor at Columbia University, as well as a research professor at Drexel University. In 2013­–2014, he served as vice-chair of the federal Astronomy and Astrophysics Advisory Committee.

Before joining the Museum in 1999, Mac Low was a scientist at the Max Planck Institute of Astronomy, in Heidelberg, and held postdoctoral positions at the University of Chicago and at NASA’s Ames Research Center, in California. Mac Low received an A.B. in physics from Princeton University in 1983 and an M.A. degree and a doctorate in physics from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1985 and 1989, respectively.
